Opteka .45x High Definition² Wide Angle Lens for Canon PowerShot A570 A590 IS Digital Camera

Nothing changes the way you see the world like High Definition², and no company does High Definition² like Opteka. In the professional setting, Opteka's glass optics define High Definition. Change the way you view the world. Enjoy outstanding detail, enjoy enhanced clarity, enjoy Opteka. Since it fits right over your camera's existing lens system, a wide-angle converter affects the full zoom range of your camera's lens. A wide-angle converter increases your angle of view - scenes include more of the landscape, groups include more people, and interiors show more of the room. A .45x wide-angle converter DOUBLES your angle of view, allowing you to get twice as much in the picture (AND your telephoto setting also becomes wider; not zooming in as close).

    A Disappointment2
I purchased this lens to use with my Canon A590IS camera. Based upon some very good results that I got with the Opteka macro lens for this camera (I gave it a 5-star rating), I had high hopes for this wide-angle lens. Unfortunately, what I got was a disappointment.

This Opteka lens comes with front and back friction-fit lens caps, an adaptor that allows the lens to be mounted on the camera, and a little drawstring bag in which to store the lens when it is not mounted on the camera. Although the description on Amazon doesn't mention it, this .45x HD2 wide-angle lens is actually two lenses in one. If you remove the front part of the wide-angle lens, you are left with a macro lens on the front of the adaptor. In fact, this component of the wide-angle lens is actually labelled "MACRO" on the lens itself, and the instructions that come with the wide-angle lens describe removing the front part to gain the use of a macro lens.

To use this lens on the A590 camera, you first remove a decorative metal ring (a bezel) from around the camera's built-in lens. The Opteka adaptor is clicked into place on the camera where the bezel was removed by means of a twist and click bayonet mount. The Opteka wide-angle lens, with macro lens, is then screwed onto the front of the adaptor. The front of the Opteka lens is threaded to permit the use of filters, if desired.

Unfortunately, the adaptor that came with the wide-angle lens was loose when mounted onto the camera. This allowed the lens to move around a bit on the camera body, making the camera-adaptor-lens assembly feel flimsy. Since this adaptor was the same part number as the adaptor that shipped with my Opteka macro lens (which fit snugly), I compared the two adaptors. This revealed that the flanges on the adaptor which couple into the camera's bayonet mount were thinner on the one supplied with the wide-angle lens; this explained the loose fit. This also means that quality control of the adaptors is lacking. And it means that if you purchase a wide-angle lens, the adaptor you receive may not fit snugly onto the camera body. This is not a defect of the wide-angle lens per se, but warrants calling 47st Photo for a replacement adaptor if the one you receive is loose.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the Opteka adaptor ring, which sticks out a little less than two inches from the camera body, partially blocks the camera's viewfinder, flash, and autofocus sensor. This is not the fault of the lens (the Canon adaptor does this, too), but rather is due to the compact design of this small camera. You'll want to use the LCD screen instead of the viewfinder and turn the flash off.

The best thing I can say about this lens is that I was able to take a picture (of sorts) through it. The lens has several optical and functional deficiencies.

First, the product description on Amazon says (as of this writing), "DOUBLES your angle of view, allowing you to get twice as much in the picture." That statement is a misrepresentation. I experimented with various camera settings, with and without this wide-angle lens, and a tape measure. The best I could obtain was to get about 30% more in the picture, which is a far cry from getting 100% more as the ad claims. This was a significant disappointment to me, and renders the lens only marginally useful in a setting where a wide-angle view is needed.

Even more disappointing was the presence of very noticeable chromatic aberration with the lens. Chromatic aberration manifests itself by placing color fringes around portions of the image, especially near the edges of the frame. Take a picture of a group of trees for example and, near the edges of the frame, the tree trunks will have an orange color fringe on one side and a blue color fringe on the other side. With this lens, it's bad. Of course, if you print or view your photos small, the fringes will not be too noticeable; however, if you print larger size or view detail, you will see very noticeable color fringes. Not good.

Given that this wide-angle lens is actually two lenses in one -- a wide-angle and, with the front component removed, a macro lens -- I decided to find out which of the two lenses introduced the chromatic aberration. I did this by removing the front part of the lens and keeping just the macro lens attached to the camera. (I thought that, even if the wide-angle were unusable, I could use the macro lens for close-up photography.) Bad news; the chromatic aberration is introduced by the macro portion of the lens assembly, which makes the lens essentially worthless for close-up macro photos as well as bad for wide-angle shots.

The functional issues relate to mounting and removing this lens from the camera, and tend to be annoyances rather than downright deficiencies. For example, the three components of this lens (adpator, macro lens, and front lens) tend to want to unscrew themselves from each other when the intent is to remove the entire lens assembly from the camera; or the fact that the lens plus adaptor will not fit into the little drawstring bag that is supplied with the lens; or the fact that the adaptor sheds tiny metal particles when the lens is screwed into it or unscrewed.

Anyway, to summarize, given how pleased I am with the Opteka macro lens for this camera, I was surprised at the fundamental deficiencies of this wide-angle lens, specifically 1) the limited increase in field width (30% vs the advertised 100%); 2) the amount of chromatic aberration; and 3) the poor (or, at least, inconsistent) quality of the adaptor. For me, it was a mistake to buy this lens. The good part was that I wasted only $30 on it.

THIS IS THE LENS TO BUY!!!5
THIS IS THE BEST LENS FOR THE A590 CANNON. You wont go wrong with this purchase. My NFL PICTURES AT DOLPHIN STADIUM ARE AMAZING!!!!
A MUST PURCHASE FOR THIS CAMERA...

    Do not buy this lens2
If you need a quick clue about whether to buy this lens or not, the short answer would be: Do not buy this lens no matter what your intentions are !

If you need more details about the arguments behind this, then here we go:
I bought this lens along with a new Canon A590IS camera, the reason for buying it was that I used to have a problem with group photos or outdoor scenes shooting: simply I couldn't fit much of what I see in the image, so I thought that a wide angle lens would do it... As Canon's solution is much more expensive than this one, I thought that this lens would be good for the amateur I am
Actually all reviews on Amazon didn't help me, and I couldn't find much details on the manufacturer's website, so I decided to write a detailed review here to help others who think of buying it

    1. The appearance of the product:
The lens look nice and well finished, however, the adapter looks really cheap and fragile, I wonder why they didnt invest some money in the adapter (the lens is not cheap anyway, when it's sold at almost 30% of the camera price)

    2. Attaching the lens:
First of all you'll have to push the small button in the front of your canon camera, then turn the ring around the lens clockwise for around 30 degrees to release it... releasing the ring is not so easy, it still takes me some time to release it (Canon to blame)
After releasing the ring, you attach the adapter the same way the ring was attached, the adapter's length is around 5cm (which is longer than the camera's depth), and no, it doesn't fit comfortably in the ring's place, so you'll see that it's very loose and shaking
After attaching the adapter you'll have to attach the lens itself, for wide angle shooting you'll have to attach the whole thing (the lens is 2 parts) which is around 4cm, for macro shooting you'll have to attach only the small part of the lens (which is around 1cm)

    3. Handling:
After attaching the whole thing, the camera become very bulky (almost triple the original size), I kept browsing Amazon and Google for a carrying case to take the whole thing but I couldn't find it
So if you plan to move around with this lens, you'll always have to de-attach it, put the camera in its case, put the lens in its bag (included with the lens package), and find a way to put the adapter in the lens bag (the bag is not designed to take both the lens and the adapter)
So it's not handy at all !! and the lens is very fragile (of course) while its cover is very loose (again) so that it can easily fall from the lens if the lens is not kept in its bag

    4. Shooting:
I think this will be the most interesting point for all of the readers
As this lens is for the A570 & the A590IS camera, then probably the buyer is an amateur photographer who needs to add more capabilities to his camera
    4.1 Shooting indoor photos:
I tried to shoot some photos for the wardrobe inside my bedroom with and without this lens
Using the lens increased the viewing angle (a little), however, the wardrobe shape became somehow circular (fish eye effect). So the image became not as realistic as I wanted it
So I think that this lens is not to be used indoor anyway (the seller's advice is to set focus to infinity, which is not applicable indoor anyway)
    4.2 Shooting with flash:
The whole bulk of space taken by the adapter and the lens is hiding big part of the flash, so all the photos taken with this lens using the flash will have a big dark spot taking almost 30% of the photo space, which will make the photo simply horrible
So, this lens is not to be used with flash anyway
    4.3 Shooting outdoor:
From 4.1 & 4.2 I realized that the only usage for this lens is to shoot outdoor photos, so I tried to shoot some photos for some faraway trees in the early morning
I tried with and without the lens
With the lens I could get a bit more of the scene in the photo (not as much as I expected), I couldnt see any enhancement in the colors or the blurring (both images where good anyway), and I had to manually set the focus to infinity to get good results
So I dont really see much benefit from using the lens in outdoor shooting

So, if you're an amateur photographer (like me), who wants to have good shots with his point & shoot camera, I think you'll have 2 options to go from here:
    1. Try to adapt with the capabilities and the viewing angle of your A590 IS (which are more than great for the camera price anyway)
    2. If you believe you need to boost your camera capabilities with a wide angle lens (for $30), a telephonto lens (for $30), and compensate the flash problem by buying an external flash (for $50), and of course this will exclude your camera price (worth $115)
Then my advice is to save your $225 from buying something useless and not handy and invest an extra $100 in buying the Canon SX10 IS camera
That last one has a built-in wide angle lens, an extremely powerful telephoto lens (20x zoom, which is much much much more than what you can get from Opteka's telephoto lens), and as all this setup is built-in in the camera you'll still be able to use it with the build-in flash, and you'll benefit from using the automatic assistance from the camera (like the autofocus), and you'll easily find a carrying case to put your nice-looking-yet-powerful camera in it

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

So, no matter what you intend to do with this lens, DO NOT BUY IT !
