Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC IF Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC IF Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC IF Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9 inch (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. The new lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 82.5mm (3.2 inch) and diameter 79mm (3.1 inch). It performs superbly even in relatively low light conditions indoors or at dusk. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which ensures fast AF speed as well as prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods. This lens is also equipped with a Zoom Lock Switch. Maximum Magnification - 1 - 2.3 Filter Size - Diameter 72mm Dimensions - Diameter 79mm x Length 82.5mm, 3.1 x 3.2 inch Weight - 455 grams (16.0 ounces)

    Amazon.com Product Description
Designed for Canon digital SLR cameras, the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 macro lens performs superbly even in relatively low light conditions, such as indoors or at dusk. The lens incorporates an inner focusing system that provides a fast autofocus speed while also preventing the front of the lens from rotating. This makes it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal-shaped lens hoods. The lens is also equipped with a zoom lock switch that eliminates "zoom creep" during transportation. And thanks to the special low dispersion (SLD) element and two aspherical elements, the lens corrects for all types of aberrations and produces a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. Other features include a minimum focusing distance of 7.9 inches, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.3, and a multilayer lens coating that reduces flare and ghosting. All Sigma lenses carry a one-year warranty.

    Know what you're getting.5
I'm a professional and I bought this as a lens to use at the beach and other places where I didn't want to risk damaging my expensive glass or getting dirt in my camera switching lenses. The main difference between this lens and my expensive glass optically is the Bokah is better on the expensive glass (the bokah on the sigma is kind of grainy without the nice round specular highlights of my nikon 28-70), the barrel distortion at 17mm is also pretty noticeable on the sigma-but it's a pretty big zoom range, and it can be corrected in PS if needed. Overall, however, the color saturation, speed, and resolution of this lens leaves little to be desired for the price, and I've wound up using it on more and more jobs because I'm willing to hang from trees, run with the camera, get in the dirt, more than I would be with a $1600 lens.

Good lens. Just what I'm looking for.4
After going through two very different lenses, I found this one to fit my style of photography. I wanted a lens that could take very good close-up pictures as well as everyday photos. I'm still an amateur but the lens is really easy to use and gives a good wide shot view. I think I'll be using this one from now on until I decide on something new. Overall, good lens.

    Great all-around lens - sharp and light5
I bought this lens as a backup for my 24-70 f2.8 L. Now this is a lens I keep on most of the time, mostly because it's much lighter than 24-70L. I saw some reviewers complaining about it being soft at extremes. My copy is tack sharp wide open, including 17mm and 70mm. I was not able to find a setting on which this lens produces soft images. I use it on Canon 20D.

Autofocus is fast, and while not as quiet as Canon USM lenses, it's not noisy. The front element does not rotate, so using a polarizer is not an issue. You can't use manual focus ring when lens is set to AF (as possible on Canon L lenses), but most people never do anyway.

The lens is 2.8 at the wide end, which matches 24-70 (and so does image quality). At the long end it's 4.5, so you do lose an f-stop or so, but this lens is half the weight and third the price of 24-70. Plus it has additional range 17-24, which is quite needed on 1.6x bodies.

The built is quite solid. It does have some zoom creep though - set it to 70mm and point upwards, and it will slide back to 30mm or so. This is not a big deal (unless if you shoot with one hand), but it does not happen on L lenses.

Overall, I highly recommend it - get your own, you won't be sorry.
